Puerto Marina, Benalmadena is located to the west of Malaga and Torremolinos. Benalmadena’s tourist explosion occurred later than Torremolinos’ and it has managed to avoid some of the uglier large concrete developments of the 1970’s. Make no mistake though: this is still the heart of tourist country with crowded beaches, an abundance of British bars and restaurants to cater for most tastes.

Puerto Marina has given the Costa Del Sol a new focal point. Popular with locals and tourists alike, the place has a distinctly international feel to it. Acting as a centre where families can spend time during the day with several shops, cafes and restaurants, while at night transforming itself into the place to go for young “party goers.” The area is crammed with a variety of nightclubs and bars playing the latest music and staying open until sunrise (or later).

The once famous Plaza Sol y Mar – better known as the 24-hour square (due to the bars and clubs staying open all night) – has now been completely rebuilt as a commercial centre with shops and cafes. The town also boasts a sea life centre in Puerto Marina, and the Tivoli theme park in the conjoined village of Arroyo de la Miel (see also more attractions in Malaga). The Torrequebrada hotel to the west of the town is one of the finest in the area, with a golf course, casino, restaurants and an international show.

While Benalmadena Costa manages to attract both family-based clientele and the “young, fun-in-the-sun” tourists Benalmadena Pueblo – which sits high on a hill looking down over the coast – has largely remained an Andalucian village. While there are several expatriates living here, they were mainly among the first wave of those to relocate to the Costa del Sol, many of them purchasing and having built large villas perched on the mountain side. Among these were some of the more notorious to move to the coast in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and possibly as a consequence Benalmadena Pueblo is a quiet and private affair.

Benalmadena is the perfect all year round holiday resort, with around 300 days of sunshine and an average annual temperature of eighteen degrees centigrade. The Costa del Sol as a whole has the best climate in mainland Europe, and it has been known for temperatures to reach the mid twenties in January and February. In the months of July and August, daytime temperatures can and do rise above forty degrees centigrade, and great care should be taken regarding dehydration. The sea temperature from July through to October is on average around twenty degrees, with fifteen degrees the normal for the rest of the year. Ok folks so we have all been on some vacation to somewhere hot, but going on holiday in search of snow is something that only a certain type of person does. That person is probably into skiing. A skiing vacation does not have to be something that a professional and seasoned skier does, and in fact I learned to ski when I was on the mountains of France. If you are considering going on a skiing holiday, then I suppose it is better to learn how to Ski before you go away, and that way you can really benefit from enjoying the more challenging slopes.

My first skiing holiday, happened because my wife said that she was bored of going on holiday in search of sun and I could hardly blame her! Year, after year we ago away to some place hot and sit on the beach all day, I don’t know about you but it is not our idea of fun. The year before we had went on a safari holiday, and this was something that we found a lot more entertaining, it gave us a chance to actually do something different: that we couldn’t do back home.

Going on a skiing holiday, was also ideal because we had family out in France. It meant that we could go and see them when we first arrived and then hit the slopes for the rest of our stay. When we first arrived at our skiing destination the first thing that struck me was how warm the place is. Being surrounded by snow, you expect to experience cold weather, but in actual fact the weather was rather pleasant. The fact is that snow is deep and compressed, and that leads to ideal conditions for hitting the slopes. My wife and I started out by booking some lessons. My wife had skied before, but she explained that because she hadn’t skied for a while, she felt like she would rather do the lessons as well. The instructor was great, and really helped to give me an understanding of what was involved. I felt like I knew how to start, and stop and I felt like that gave me the necessary confidence to get started. The instructor seemed to really understand how to teach us, and I suppose that would come with his experience. He explained to us the importance of safety on the slopes, and how you have to be aware of what the people are doing around you.

During our holiday, we had a really great time. We woke up early and hit the slopes everyday. My wife and I both had really sore legs on the first few days, but that is because we both sit behind a desk five days a week. At night time, we were able to go out for dinner, and we soon became temporary locals at a nice restaurant that overlooked the slopes. It really was great, especially the food. Their were also lots of nice pubs and clubs, however we very rarely went out after our dinner: being on the slopes all day takes all the energy out of you.

If you are planning a skiing vacation then I do have a few words of warning before you decide to actually go away. Firstly, you should make sure that you are going to be in the correct physical condition to hit the slopes when you are over their. My uncle and auntie are well into their fifties and they decided to go on a skiing vacation. I never had the heart to say to them before they went, but as you can imagine it hardly the best idea, especially when my auntie suffers from heart problems. They went away and came back telling the relatives: “There is nothing to do if you don’t want to ski”. I found this hilarious, however they seemed to think it was perfectly reasonable.

No, this is not about the taxi movie or even about New York taxis. It’s a review of Cebu taxi drivers, traffic and the safety of the occupants riding inside.

First, to a new visitor from the USA or Europe it might be an interesting or a frightening experience to say the least. But for the most part I think it is safe, riding in the Cebu taxis. A novice will not understand that a two or three lane highway has just become five lanes of traffic. That the horn has replaced the brakes and the turn signal lights don’t blink at all before the turn or merging into traffic.

Second, think about trying to get a taxi in New York, Chicago, London or Paris. It might be a long wait or long lines in front of theaters, night clubs or your hotel. Taxis seem to be everywhere here in Cebu, there are short lines and ample waiting taxis .

The driver is very skilled in getting you from point “A” to point “B” in a short amount of time. But if not wise, you could experience a few more points in the alphabet during your ride! When you get into a Cebu taxi make sure there is a meter or you know the fare to your destination and agree before proceeding.

The drivers are a cross between a taxi driver and a race car driver at a motor speedway. ( Indy 500 ) They can make turns, follow close, and stop on a dime at excessive speeds. Try going through streets the size of a city alley and missing people sitting, standing and walking within this same space. The alley size street has other vehicles passing from the opposite direction and of course the extended market and crowds in the evening. Now, the show-stopper; passing vehicles in this marginal area of the race track. You can read the license, see the scratches in the paint, count the seconds before impact and reach for the door. But before you complete your move his is done and you are around the other vehicle.

Maybe after one or two close calls you will calm down and begin to trust his ability. But don’t think that there won’t be something that you will question later or happen upon a new situation. It’s just around the next corner waiting for you!

You may have only experienced driving in the daytime sunshine and the trip from the airport to your hotel.

Now try rush hour traffic, stop lights, brake lights, headlights, vehicles with no lights and people walking in-between vehicles. Your taxi in Cebu driver has yet to slow down or stop moving at great speed and swift moves. This is city driving at its best in Cebu.

There are a couple of weather conditions you will not encounter here in the Philippines such as snow or ice but one condition that is common is the rain. But here it can rain a little or a lot in a small period of time. Yet, traffic doesn’t slow nor does the the driver’s skills.

But if you travel outside the city on country roads and oh!, mountainous territories, it will provide you with another great experience, if you have nerves of steel. Yes, I didn’t mention wipers that don’t function, fog and fogged windows.I don’t think I would travel much at night on these roadways or when raining. It seems that the safety issue is at its greatest concern at these times and were most fatalities occur. Have a good time in Cebu, try to relax, enjoy your trip and share the great experiences with your taxi driver.

3) The first 2 points are perfectly valid in any trip planning but almost worthless when you consider that you might have to shell out a lot more bucks for destinations abroad. There is a beautiful beach state located not too far from anyone East of the Mississippi. That’s right. Florida. Florida is back and it’s beaches are still fantastic. Florida is still beautiful. There has been a lot of development of Florida during the last 50 years, but Florida is still a massive state with plenty of undiscovered beaches. The state of Florida can be great if you know where to look. It’s pretty nice. Trust us….the undiscovered spots of Florida can really be something else. However, they are becoming more and more difficult to find as thousands of people move to Florida every month.
