Experience the Rugged Beauty of Kauai on Your Hawaii Vacation
Kauai is the Hawaiian island that gives visitors a glimpse back to a time long before the first humans settled this Pacific island chain. Hawaii vacations can be all beaches and big resorts, but if you’re looking to experience some of Hawaii’s natural splendors, you should book Hawaii flights to Kauai.
On Kauai you will be able to marvel at monumental canyons, soaring cliffs and experience the power of huge waterfalls. Hawaii vacations can offer adventure, so don’t forget to pack those hiking boots.
The Grand Canyon of the Pacific
One of the natural wonders of Hawaii is Waimea Canyon in Koke’e State Park. The canyon is located off route 550, outside of Lihue. The canyon is more than 10 miles long and at least one mile wide. In some places the canyon is 3,000 feet deep. The canyon is famous for its reddish appearance, which is due to the high copper content in the soil. For the avid hiker, this canyon is an experience not to be missed.
Waterfalls
Because Kauai experiences the heaviest rainfall in the Hawaiian chain, the waterfalls on the island are spectacular. One of the best views on Kauai is the Opaekaa Falls. They are located off Route 580. There is no trail down to the falls from the road, but there is an overlook just off the highway.
Another must-see is Wailua Falls, which is quite close to the Opaekaa Falls. Located outside of Lihue, these falls are 80 feet high and are viewed from an overlook. On first glance, the falls look like one big waterfall, but they are in fact three. Hundreds of years ago, Hawaiian men would prove their manhood by jumping from the top of Wailua Falls. There is a trail leading down the bottom of the falls. Experienced hikers should only attempt it as the terrain is uneven and the rocks are slippery.
Na Pali Coast
There are few words to describe the Na Pali Coast. The vaulting cliffs are a rare sight indeed and the beaches are like something out of a dream. The Na Pali Coast in Kauai has been featured in many major motion pictures. It played backdrop in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park’. The only way you can reach this breathtaking coast is by boat. The only land access is a strenuous hike called the Kalalau Trail.
This trail is 11 miles long. Fit hikers should be able to complete it in a day, but most will have to break and camp overnight. The hike takes in five valleys and ends at Kalalau beach. The Na Pali Coast is quite remote so it’s perfect for those looking to escape commercial tourist centers like Honolulu.
If you are looking for an off the beaten path-style vacation, book Hawaii flights to the island of Kauai. Along with great beaches, there are canyons, dramatic coastlines and awe-inspiring waterfalls.
