If asked, maybe you would name Spain or Italy as your favourite Mediterranean destination?
A growing band of holiday makers would now prefer Egypt as their number one choice. At first this may seem incredible, but in reality there is a far amount of Mediterranean coastline available to Egypt.
The northern coast stretches from Alexandria in the east to the Libyan border to the west.
There is plenty on offer for luxury holidays in an area which still boasts its fair share of original and authentic villages. The picturesque village of Al-Hamman, built 2,700 years ago by the Greeks, reflects some of the country’s rich cultural history. It became known for its cistern, one of a series built by the Romans along the coastal route. The bustling and lively market was first used by pilgrims from Africa.
It has now become a commercial centre for the new holiday villages and resorts. Sidi Abdel Rahman is another popular Egypt holidays destination, which boast stunning white sandy beaches and clear seawater. The downside to the northern resorts would be the inconsistency of climate.
The resorts of Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada however, enjoy sunshine all year round and have a wealth of activities for visitors.
Sharm El-Sheikh (also known as the City of Peace) was until recently a quiet fishing village. It is almost unrecognisible today, and has become one of most visited resorts in Egypt.
It is the centre of the country’s diving industry, and boasts some of the best luxury hotels in Egypt. The water is crystal clear, and the underwater scenery is stunning. Within this, it is possible to see rare and beautiful reefs home to a large variety of exotic fish. You don’t have to be the world’s best diver to enjoy all of this.
It is visible simply by using a snorkel off the coast. But there are plenty of challenges for all levels, including the more accomplished scuba diver.
