Enjoy starting the day with a relaxing breakfast by the sea, at the newly restored Tel-Aviv Port, which is now celebrating its 70th year. After breakfast, you can take advantage of the cool morning weather at the Yarkon Park. Reminiscent of a miniature version of New York’s Central Park, you will find vast stretches of green lawns and gardens, an artificial lake with rental boats, bicycle paths, and an amphitheater for shows and concerts. Children can enjoy a train ride around the park and the playgrounds, featuring large wooden climbing frames. The park also features the Zapari Bird Park and the Meimadion Water Park.

Once you have finished in the park, you can escape the late morning and afternoon heat in one of the many museums or galleries in Tel-Aviv. We particularly recommend the Jewish Diaspora Museum.
The Jewish Diaspora Museum, (Beith Hatefusoth, the Nahum Goldmann Museum of the Jewish Diaspora) is situated on the University of Tel- Aviv campus. The museum was designed to relate the story and history of the Jewish people throughout the last 2,500 years, from their expulsion from Israel until the present. The museum thematically relates Jewish history in the Diaspora by examining different aspects of Jewish life, such as culture, family life, community life, the return to Zion, and many others. One of the highlights of the museum is a huge database of more than 2,100,000 genealogies of Jewish families from all over the world. Visitors can conduct a search for their family name, and can also register their own family trees.

If you happen to be in Tel-Aviv on a Tuesday or Friday, you should head over to the Nachalat Binyamin area after the museum. It is situated at Nachalat Binyamin St. and the corner of Allenby Rd. Both Nachalat Binyamin and the Shuk HaKarmel will give you a glimpse of the color and flavor of Tel-Aviv. The Shuk is a large open market with lots of fresh produce and bargains, and the vendors have the loud, slightly outrageous character that one only finds in Israel.

Nachalat Binyamin is the textile center of Tel-Aviv, which hosts an artisan’s fair twice a week. The street is packed with artists and vendors, selling handicrafts, jewelry, artwork and Judaica. There are street performers, musicians, fortune-tellers and portrait artists. You can catch a light bite to eat at one of the caf?s, and will certainly enjoy the vibrant, jubilant atmosphere of the fair.

The market is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 to 17:00.

You should then continue on to the Neve Tzedek area, which was the first Jewish neighborhood to be built outside of Jaffa, at the beginning of 1887. This area of Tel-Aviv is lovely and quiet, featuring narrow, winding roads and unique architecture that has been beautifully restored. Over the years, Neve Tzedek has traditionally been the home of many famous artists and writers, including the Hebrew Nobel Literature prizewinning author, Shai Agnon, who resided in the neighborhood from 1909 to 1912.

There are a number of interesting art galleries in the area, including The Rokach House, located at 26 Simon Rokach St., the Nachum Gutman Museum, found at 21 Rokach St., and the Chlouche Gallery , located at 32 Shlush St . On Shabazi St. and the surrounding area there are many beautiful shops and boutiques, and if you have worked up an appetite from all of the legwork, there are plenty of excellent caf?s to choose from.

A nice way to end your tour of Neve Tzedek is to visit the Suzanne Dellal Center for Dance and Theatre, located at 6 Yehieli St. It is one of Tel Aviv’s most prominent theatrical and cultural centers, and is the home of the famous Bat-Sheva dance group. The center is surrounded by lovely gardens and features a beautiful piazza. You can call them beforehand (Tel: 03-510-5656) to find out the schedule of events, which is comprised of a wide range of performances and festivals, featuring many different styles of dance and music, suitable for children and adults.

If you don’t find an evening performance at the Suzanne Dellal center that appeals to you, you can head over to the Tayelet (promenade) along the beach, which comes to life after sunset. The Tayelet is packed with restaurants, bars and caf?s, each with a different personality and feel. If you’ve been to any store lately you’ve seen that the holiday decorations have hit the stores. It’s the time of year that puts everyone in a good mood until the time that the family arrives on your doorstep. Then of course, the rush is on to get it all done in time. If you’re anything like me and my family, there are always last minute trips to the store to get everything that is needed for the dinner and the delivery of presents.

Now is the time to plan out your whole event. You should know now whether you are traveling to a relatives’ for the holiday or even just for dinner. It’s a good time to start planning your menu’s and your presents for the people on your list.

Here are a few things to make your holidays run a bit smoother:

1. Write a list of each person who is to receive a present. If you need to draw names, make it happen via email this week. Then select a budget for each person and draw the cash out and put it in envelopes. Make a vow to stay within the budget you’ve set.

2. Start by perusing the catalogs. It’s an easier way to shop. There are so many catalogs on line now so shopping on line will help you stay away from that crazy holiday rush.

3. Shopping in one place certainly saves time, and places like TJ MAX and Marshalls are old favorites and do carry affordable items for the whole family.

4. Once you’ve gotten the shopping done, it’s time to start the decorating. I usually purchase a few magazines specifically for the holidays and do one art project that will last. It’s been fun to see my projects through the years that took a day to make, but have been in our family for years. If you’re “crafty” enough, then these items make excellent gifts for your friends and neighbors. Presents like pinecone wreaths or candle covers are easy, fun to make and last for years.

5. Next, comes the cooking! This is the one that seems like it should wait, but in realty it’s a great time to start right now! We still have a few weekends before Thanksgiving and those early Saturday mornings are a great time to bake up and decorate holiday cookies and bars. In addition, homemade jellies and jams make excellent holiday gifts to share. My personal favorite is Hot Jezabel. I make it with pineapple and apricot jelly, horseradish, dry mustard and black pepper. It is delicious on top of cream cheese with crackers. Put in a cute jar, with a box of crackers, the recipe in a basket makes an affordable and delicious gift.

6. Get your kids dressed and head to the nearest hotel lobby for a beautiful holiday picture! Sure, you can go to a studio and spend upwards of $100, or you can get dressed and go to a nice hotel where you can take a picture that is classy and will impress your friends! Get them printed at Walmart and you’re good to go for your holiday newsletter and card!

7. Last but not least, understand that the holidays are some of the most stressful times of the year. If you have a family and are traveling or entertaining, you need to schedule some time for relaxing without doing anything. Book your manicure ahead of time or a fun cookie exchange evening out with the gals in advance.

One can not help but be drawn to this natural wonder. Purported to have curative powers this man-made lagoon has a water temperature of 40C. The Blue Lagoon is a truly magnificent and unique experience especially if you wish to bathe in it when there is snow all around you!

4. On a clear day in Reykjavik, the enigmatic Snaefellsjokull glacier can be seen across the sea in the distance even though it is over 60 miles away. People believe that it has mystical powers ever since Jules Verne wrote The Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. The landscape features stunning moorlands, beautiful meadows, rivers and small ponds along with beautiful rock formations not to mention the black sand beaches. In a very short time Americans will be off in masses for family gatherings for the Thanksgiving holiday. While staying home is the best advice the reality is that this holiday is the most heavily traveled in the country. Regardless of the delays, exhaustion and memories of arguemetns from last year, we’re all heading out to do it again.

You can get ready and be less stressed than last year with a few easy Thanksgiving travel tips.

Pack light. Carry one soft side bag. The one thig to count on at this time of year is long lines. Set your mind that delays will happen. If you pack light you can move around more easily while waiting for that late bus, train or plane.

Take a special book, magazine or DVD movie for those delay times. If you have something special to do while waiting the time goes much smoother. Pack low-sugar snacks and drinks. Travelers don’t need a sugar rush while waiting or in cramped quarters.

Flying
Arrive at the airport two hours prior to scheduled flight departure time, both on the outbound and inbound trips. This is once you get into the terminal. Build in extra time to park your car. Remember, lots and parking resources will be filled so making a reservation at an off site parking facility will help. Most of them take holiday reservations with a deposit.

Stay Informed. Stay in touch with real-time flight status on the airline’s web before heading to the airport. If you have an e-ticket the kiosks and skip ticket counter lines. Most airlines have these now so use them. Consider full-service curbside check-in if you have ski, snowboard, golf or sporting equipment.

Expect to stand in long lines. Expect planes to be jammed. On board stowage space will be critically limited so again, take only one small soft side bag to slip under the seat. If you are taking a gift leave it unwrapped. Most security checkpoints will now require you to unwrap wrapped gifts. Better yet, mail it on ahead a few days before your plane flight.

Driving
If you are hitting the road in your car and driving, make sure its in good working order. Check you oil, water, washer fluid and tire pressure. Make sure you pack emergency supplies in case you get stranded. Take fresh containers of drinking water. If you are in colder areas take blankets and warm jackets, tire chains de-icer.

Plan your trip so you do not return on Sunday. It’ not recommended to drive on the SUnday after Thanksgiving. It is the worst, most traffic-heavy day of the year. Try leaving Saturday or staying through Monday.

Take games. Better yet, if your vehicle or laptop has a DVD player, take movies. There’s no shame in a quiet, fight-free ride on the way home.

Christmas may very well be the oldest holiday that is shared across the many cultures of the world; it is traditionally celebrated during the winter season (or even the warm summer season if you count Australia, where Christmas is celebrated as an official holiday).

In Scandinavia during the Winter Solstice, men and their sons used to go in to the woods to cut a tree down. After the tree had been felled, a nicely sized log was cut out of it, and the men would carry the log back to the home. This log was dubbed a Yule Log, and the Yule log was burned in the fireplace. The entire time the Yule log burned, the family would feast. Often times the Yule log might burn for a whole twelve days! Of course, as the Yule log burned it sent sparks out of the hearth and as the sparks flew out of the fire place, the family would count the sparks and each spark stood for a farm animal (a cow, a goat, a pig, etc) that would be born on their property that year. It is important to note that farm animals were signs of wealth back then.

Saturnalia is a celebration of the Winter Solstice that occurred in ancient pagan Rome. Saturnalia was celebrated in honor of the god of agriculture, who was named Saturn. During the time of Saturnalia, the entire Roman empire is in a state of social disarray. Servants and peasants spend time with and celebrate the holiday with people of higher classes, which was a rarity back then.

The Saturnalia festival in itself can last as long as an entire week in Rome. During that time, people rejoiced all over the country of Rome. The phrase ‘eat, drink, and be merry’ was played out to its fullest. Shops and businesses are closed during the Festival of Saturnalia. Following the first week of Saturnalia, the festival itself usually ends, but the Saturnalia period itself does not end.

In addition to Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture, the Romans also worshipped an infant type god named Methra, who was carved out of a rock. On Mithra’s birthday, people also rejoiced, just as they did during Saturnalia. The day of this rock god’s birthday was one of the most sacred days of the year for the Roman people. Imagine choosing between a guest house with a set of strict rules – and a landlady ready to enforce them, or a holiday camp with tents and daily chores to complete. When you think of holidays in England I wonder what images enter your head first? Maybe the famous red buses in London? Or possibly the splendour of Windsor Castle, the Tower of London or Buckingham Palace?

All of those images point to some great features of England for visitors but there is a hidden side to the country. If you try and move away from the well-trodden routes of the tourist trail you’ll find some real gems.

A great example of this is the South West of England. This is a region of the country that is sometimes overlooked by visitors and yet contains all of the key elements for a wonderful stay. You can certainly be forgiven for knowing little about this area, so maybe you’re unaware that it contains the finest Roman spa town in the country, sandy beaches, an indoor rainforest and some great surfing. A real mixture for all the family!

There are so many wonderful places to visit in the south west that it’s difficult to know where to start. Indeed, you’ll find that this article only gives you a small taster of what the region has to offer.

To begin with, let’s turn our attention to Bath, the unique city that is a World Heritage Site. The city of Bath was founded before the Romans even arrived in the British Isles but it is the Romans who expanded the city and helped to build its reputation. This was primarily due to their construction of the extensive Roman Baths complex, which is still open to visitors. Indeed, you’re still able to drink the spa water, produced from a natural spring!

The city is also renowned for its splendid and distinctive Georgian architecture – nowhere is this more evident than when you see the Georgian crescents. As you would expect of an English city, you’ll also find a more modern mix of shops, restaurants, theatres and pubs. The beauty of Bath is that the modern and the ancient seem to live side by side.

Elsewhere in South West England, Cornwall is a hidden gem that seems to have remained that way despite the fondness of the English for visiting the county on their own holidays.

The world famous Eden Project has provided a central focus for tourism in the region but it is by no means all that is on offer. You’ll find quaint, traditional seaside towns, as well as modern locations where you can relax on the beach and even enjoy the best surfing conditions in the country (St Ives is particularly popular for this pursuit).
